Española Valley Torch Run Blessing
July 7th, 2017 at 2:30PM
El Santuario de Chimayó
Chimayó , New Mexico
(The Torch Run will commence following the Blessing, runners will begin at the Santuario and make their way to the Plaza.)
Origins of the Torch Run: In 1969, the United States Military was in the midst of the unpopular Vietnam War, a war that eventually took the lives of 58,315 Americans and wounding 153,303 more. Many of those were from here in the Española Valley. Outraged by the numerous deaths, and the lack of care, organizers created the Torch Run. The Santuario was chosen as the place where people could come together to pray that the war would end, and no more lives of young men would be taken. Individuals would then run, along with the torch, which was passed from person to person through twelve individuals through Chimayó and the Española Valley. A flame was then then ignited by the last runner in the center of our city honoring those young men who gave their lives for us.
